Awareness sharing session on Environmental Protection in Sabah: Scheduled Waste | December 9, 2023 | SEPA Office, Kota Kinabalu
Our consultant, Mr. Sam Tsen, spoke on scheduled waste at an Environment Talk organized by the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (SEPA), held at SEPA’s office in Kompleks Karamunsing, Kota Kinabalu, for an audience of industry professionals and members of the public.
The talk referenced documented cases of scheduled waste mismanagement in Malaysia, including the 2019 Sungai Kim incident in Pasir Gudang, Johor, where illegal dumping of chemical waste into a river caused mass breathing difficulties among residents and led to the closure of more than 100 schools. Mr. Tsen referenced the case to explain how scheduled waste is classified, how its handling and disposal is regulated in Malaysia, and the safeguards industries can put in place to prevent similar incidents.
